======================================== Global Overlay Mapper v1.8 (c) Copyright Tim Makins EI8IC 2001-2011 ========================================= ============================================ Welcome to the Global Overlay Mapper v1.8 ============================================ The following information is available in this README file: o PRE-INSTALLATION o DOWNLOADING o INSTALLATION o UP-DATE TO THE LATEST VERSION o USAGE TIPS o UNINSTALLATION o PREVIOUS VERSION DETAILS o CONTACT INFORMATION ================ PRE-INSTALLATION ================ PLEASE READ THIS SECTION !! The Global Overlay Mapper, like any program coded in Visual Basic.NET, needs the Microsoft.NET Framework v1.1 to be already installed. Many computers already have this. If it is missing, the program will tell you, or you can click 'Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs' and look for 'Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1' to check for yourself. The Version that you need is '.NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package' (23MB). You can get it from the website here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=262d25e3-f589-4842-8157-034d1e7cf3a3&DisplayLang=en or you can click on the following link to go straight to the file: http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/a/c/aac39226-8825-44ce-90e3-bf8203e74006/dotnetfx.exe Note: If you are exploring the Microsoft Download pages, you might also see a file '.NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package'. You might even have this already installed on your computer. Despite what you might think, though, Version 2.0 is NOT a 'new and improved' version of 1.0, it is a totally different program. Both versions can be present on your computer at the same time: there is no need to uninstall one before installing the other. When you have the .NET Framework installed, you can run any software package written in Visual Basic.NET, so its worth taking the time to acquire and install it. =========== DOWNLOADING =========== All the files needed for the Global Overlay Mapper can be downloaded from: http://www.mapability.com/ei8ic/gom/download.php ============ INSTALLATION ============ To install the Global Overlay Mapper you will need the following zip files: GOM1.zip, GOM2.zip, GOM3.zip, GOM4.zip, GOM5.zip. (DO **NOT** USE THE UPDATE ZIPFILE 'UPDATE_V1.8.ZIP' AT THIS POINT). Un-pack the 5 zip-files (using the 'WinZip' program or similar) into a temporary folder anywhere on your computer. Your 'Desktop' would be a suitable location for a temporary folder. Double-click the file 'Setup.exe' to do the installation. After it has finished, you can delete the temporary folder. ============================= UP-DATE TO THE LATEST VERSION ============================= Once you have installed the original version of the Global Overlay Mapper, you should then add the latest updates. To update the Global Overlay Mapper to the latest version you will need the following zip file: UPDATE_v1.8.zip. The files in this archive are self-routing, which ensures that each file goes into the correct storage location automatically. To install the update-files, you need to extract them from the archive. If you are using the Winzip program, you should start it running, then click on 'Open', and browse to the downloaded update file: 'UPDATE_v1.8.zip'. Click 'OK' to select it, then click 'Extract'. Browse to the folder where you have the Global Overlay Mapping System installed, (normally C:\Program Files\MapAbility\Global Overlay Mapper V1.5.0) and enter this address in the 'Extract to' box. Select the 'All Files', 'Overwrite Existing Files', and 'Use folder names' options. All three options are absolutely required in WinZip for the program to work. Click 'Extract', and WinZip does the rest for you. Close the Winzip program. If you are using the WinRAR program, you should start it running, then click 'File>Open Archive', and browse to the downloaded update file: 'UPDATE_v1.8.zip'. Click 'Extract To' and browse to the folder where you have the Global Overlay Mapping System installed, (normally C:\Program Files\MapAbility\Global Overlay Mapper V1.5.0). This address will then be stored in the 'Destination Path' window. Set the 'Update Mode' to 'Extract and Replace Files', and the 'Overwrite Mode' to 'Overwrite without prompt'. Click 'OK' and WinRAR does the rest for you. Close the WinRAR program. Start the Global Overlay Mapping System as normal. The new data will be integrated, and the opening screen will inform you that the Overlay Version is now 2.3. If the Overlay Version still says 2.1 then the above updates have not been installed correctly. This is probably because you un-zipped the files to the wrong base-location. Please read the instructions for updating carefully, and try the procedure again. ========== USAGE TIPS ========== Full useage information for the Global Overlay Mapper is provided in the comprehensive Help Guide.
